Des Moines – January 14, 2011 – The Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ICADV) and the Skylark Project are pleased to announce that, on his last day in office, Governor Culver commuted the sentence of Sheila Schertz. While serving more than thirty years, she been an active volunteer, a resident of the special privilege unit, and she’s maintained an exemplary behavioral record despite being unjustly imprisoned for a crime in which she was an unwilling participant. The Skylark Project, a program of ICADV, offers comprehensive services to incarcerated victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The cornerstone of Skylark is commutation assistance. Skylark selects a limited number of women each year through a rigorous three phase screening process. Skylark provides intensive support and assistance in drafting their applications and practicing interview skills in preparation for their Board of Parole and Governor’s Office interviews. ICADV supervises and matches law students from the University of Iowa College of Law with incarcerated battered women in an effort to facilitate successful completion of the commutation application process. All of the women selected by the Skylark Project were severely battered. The battering played a crucial role in their crime. They all have had good disciplinary [...]

The latest data from the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) indicates over 650 confirmed and probable cases of pertussis (whooping cough) were reported in 2010, and activity continues to be strong so far in 2011. The actual number of cases is probably much larger since most adults with pertussis are not diagnosed. There were approximately 66 percent more cases of pertussis reported in 2010 than the average of the past five years. While children ages 5 to 14 years make up the bulk of reported cases, it’s important to note that adults are considered the primary ‘spreader’ of the disease. “Children receive pertussis-containing vaccine at 6 months of age, and are recommended to get a booster dose of pertussis-containing vaccine at 11 or 12 years of age,” said IDPH Medical Director, Dr. Patricia Quinlisk. “Typically adults haven’t had a pertussis vaccination since childhood so they probably have no immunity left to pertussis. When they get the disease, their symptoms are milder and are often mistaken for a lingering cough; thus, they spread the disease to others without knowing they have it.” It’s especially important that adults receive pertussis-containing vaccine because they can spread the disease to infants who are [...]

Radon is a cancer-causing, radioactive gas. The World Health Organization and EPA has identified Radon Gas as the leading cause of lung cancer in for non-smokers in 2010. Find out what you can do to prevent this silent killer in your home, community, state and nation! Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas released in rock, soil, and water from the natural decay of uranium. While levels in outdoor air pose a relatively low threat to human health, radon can accumulate to dangerous levels inside buildings. You can’t see, smell, or taste it, but an elevated radon level in your home may be affecting the health of your family. Exposure to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and the number one cause among non-smokers. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that radon causes more than 20,000 lung cancer deaths in the country each year. Only smoking causes more lung cancer deaths. If you smoke and your home has radon, your risk of lung cancer can be higher. Radon is found all over the United States. Radon has been found in elevated levels in homes in every state. No area of the country is free [...]
