As you complete your holiday shopping this year, think of locally owned businesses first. Why shop at a locally owned business? Because far more of money spent at local businesses is reinvested in our community. Spend $100 at a local business and approximately 68% of that stays in our community. Local businesses also create higher-paying jobs and contribute more of our taxes to be reinvested in our community–where they belong.
Local retailers are our friends and neighbors—support them and they’ll support you. Local businesses donate to charities at more than twice the rate of national chains. More independent businesses mean more choice, more diversity, and a truly unique community. Plus, shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money to beautify our community.
So as the holiday shopping heats up, please remember those local stores who are contributing to the Heartland’s economy. KYOU Fox-15 is working to raise awareness of the importance of shopping local so that community-centric businesses will survive and thrive this holiday season. From your friends at KYOU, we hope you have a happy and healthful holiday season, and please remember to Think Local First!
