January is Radon Action Month Five out of seven Iowa homes have elevated radon level Governor Terry Branstad will formally declare January as “Radon Action Month” in Iowa with a proclamation signing on Thursday, January 5. Radon is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas that causes no immediate health symptoms, but long-term exposures may cause lung cancer. It comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil. Simple test kits can reveal the amount of radon in any building. Buildings with high levels can usually be fixed with simple and affordable venting techniques. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, one in 15 homes across the U.S and five out of seven homes in Iowa have an elevated radon level. Radon gas seeps into a house the same way air or other soil gases enter: from the soil around and under the home; through cracks in the foundation, floor or walls; through hollow-block walls; and through openings around floor drains, pipes and sump pumps. Radon has been detected in new and old homes, and in homes with or without basements. Test kits are simple to use and typically cost less than $20. To order a test kit or learn additional information about [...]

The Pari-Mutuel Wagering Act became law in Iowa in 1983, paving the way for horse and dog racing, casino gaming, and the Iowa Lottery. The economic benefits of Iowa’s gambling industry are well-known; according to the Iowa Gaming Association, state casinos generated $306,575,000 in tax revenue and employed nearly 10,000 people in FY2010. Since the lottery’s inception in 1985, more than $1 billion has been raised for state programs. What may not be so well-known is the heavy price individuals and their families and communities pay related to problem gambling. The social consequences of problem gambling include broken relationships, mental health problems, ruined finances and lost jobs. Of those seeking problem gambling treatment in Iowa, 30 percent reported gambling-related debt over $20,000, 32 percent have filed bankruptcy, and 17 percent have been arrested in the past 12 months. National studies have found that 17 percent of pathological gamblers have attempted suicide, 20 percent have major depression and 76 percent have a lifetime history of a substance use. Despite the heavy burden of problem gambling, there is clear evidence that people can find relief through treatment. Research by the University of Northern Iowa Center for Social and Behavioral Research found that [...]

Three months ago, many Iowans pledged that 2011 would be the year they ‘get healthy.’ For some, that meant strict diets with unrealistic requirements, or lofty fitness goals that included hours of daily exercise. While television shows or expensive weight-loss retreats may highlight results from these types of approaches, a simpler, more common-sense approach can be successful as well. The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) reminds Iowans that March is National Nutrition Month – a good opportunity to brush up on the proven, healthy ways to achieve wellness. “The best approaches to weight loss and fitness are the ones that can be sustained over the long term,” said IDPH Director, Dr. Mariannette Miller-Meeks. “Fad diets and exercise may have short-term success, but common sense approaches that combine healthy eating with physical activity will result in a lifetime of good health.” In January, the U.S. Department of Health and Human services released Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010, emphasizing three major goals for Americans: Enjoy your food, but eat less and avoid oversized portions Eat more fruits and vegetables and switch to fat-free or 1 percent milk Drink water instead of sugary drinks and read food labels to choose items with [...]

Des Moines – Saturday, March 5th, is Take Five Iowa Day, a day for Iowans to talk with children about the benefits of being drug-free. In observance of Take Five Iowa Day, the Partnership for a Drug-Free Iowa/Face It Together is joining with the Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy in calling on parents to set aside a few minutes to talk with their young sons and daughters about making healthy choices to prevent drug abuse. “It’s especially timely now for parents to talk with children about drugs, in light of recent reports showing a rise in teenage substance abuse, particularly marijuana use, nationally,” said Peter Komendowski, President of the Partnership for a Drug-Free Iowa/Face It Together. “Research shows that asking questions, setting boundaries and monitoring friends can reduce the odds of teenagers using harmful drugs.” Studies by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America repeatedly show that teenagers who learn about the risks of drugs through ongoing dialog with parents at home are up to 50 percent less likely to ever use drugs. “The recent increase in teen substance abuse nationally follows several years of declining drug use and coincides with a few states legalizing marijuana smoking, purportedly for medical [...]

(Kirksville, MO) — The City of Kirksville and the Northeast Missouri Solid Waste Management District are excited to offer a collection site for Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) for all residents of Kirksville and Adair County. This facility is housed at the Public Works Complex, located at 2001 N. Osteopathy Street. The HHW site will hold its first collection event on March 9, by appointment only, from 9 to 11 am. Citizens may call the Public Works Complex at 627-1291 to schedule their appointments. When calling to schedule an appointment, it is important to know what is being disposed and the quantity that will be dropped off at the collection site. Scheduled drop off appointments will ensure that qualified staff are available to assist citizens with their disposal of eligible items. The HHW collection site will not accept any HHW without a scheduled appointment. The program is limited to household waste and does not include disposal of any commercial hazardous waste. Household Hazardous Waste is a broad term that applies to any leftover household products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable, or reactive ingredients. Items that will be accepted at the Kirksville collection site include: Aerosols, Antifreeze, Batteries-nicad, Batteries-alkaline, Batteries-lead acid, Batteries-lithium, [...]

Des Moines-February 17, 2011-Couples around the state celebrated their relationships this week on Valentine’s Day. This holiday is aptly situated in the middle of Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. During this month, Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence recognizes the negative impacts of dating violence in the lives of youth and the importance of meaningful school based intervention and initiatives as a component of broader violence prevention work. Dating abuse is a widespread problem; nationally, up to 40% of teens have been in abusive relationships and of those that have 43% experienced abuse while at school. Schools must get involved because teens are statistically at a higher risk for intimate partner abuse than adults. If dating violence is ever going to be stopped we must engage with teens where they are most likely to be influenced… at school. Providing assistance to teens is feasible with the help of school policies. Senate File 86 has been introduced to the Iowa Senate and would create school policies for addressing teen dating violence. This bill calls for the Department of Education to distribute model dating violence policy to assist all schools in developing policies for dating violence. Similar legislation and school policies [...]
